| Ya Kun Cai Fashion Designer, BFA Fashion Design Ya Kun Cai is a Chinese-born designer. In 2000 he enrolled at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in Auckland. He studied Arts, Photography and Graphic Design but it was in his chosen major of Fashion Design that he won first prize at the graduation exhibition show in 2007. In 2009, Ya Kun Cai established his own brand, based in New Zealand. "I wanted to be a writer so that I could write about people I have known and thoughts I have on my mind." Ya Kun Cai uses fashion as a medium to transform written language into a physical form. Each of his seasonal collections is a novel and the individual garments are its characters, lifted from its pages. His collections aren't built up with the popular trends of the day, but with a true story, a book or even a painting as the inspiration. Ya Kun Cai is inspired by the fitted tailoring of Savile Row. He unites classical and modern elements with a sophisticated twist. Ya Kun does not believe in "fast fashion". Instead, he holds these ideals: unique cut; outstanding shape; and avant-garde philosophy. Ya Kun's designs are for the discerning couture-wearer who rebels against conformity and who chases freedom. "The true philosophy of fashion - always in the minority, never the majority."
